Overweight Women Experience Obesity

Image
Overweight women face a multitude of hardships - such as discrimination in the workplace - that arise from the stigma surrounding obesity. While weight loss may seem like the solution for women hoping to escape anti-fat prejudice, it may not be that simple after all. New research out of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, The University of Manchester and Monash University, has revealed that anti-fat prejudice still persisted against former obese women, even after they had lost a significant amount of weight. Previous research has shown that the harmful nature of obesity stigma crossed many domains, Dr. Janet Latner, the study's lead author at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, told FoxNews.com. So we designed an experiment to look at whether obesity sting persisted once the weight had been dropped. Published in the journal Obesity, the study asked young men and women participants to read various stories about a woman who had lost about 70 pounds, or a woman who was currently

Eating more Fruits and Vegetables

Image
It's almost June, which means you have a little more than six months to finally complete that New Year's weight loss resolution. Now a study offers two simple changes that may help you reach your goal: Stop sitting in front of the television and start eating more fruits and vegetables. While these health tips might seem obvious, it's their long-term sustainability that has scientists praising their virtues. According to the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine study published in the May 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, by making these adjustments you'll be more likely to maintain these habits to lead a healthier lifestyle. Sedentary lifestyle tied to diabetes, heart disease, premature death: Is TV to blame? Sitting too much may double your risk of dying, study shows "Just making two lifestyle changes has a big overall effect and people don't get overwhelmed," Dr. Bonnie Spring, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwest

Kids Swallowing Laundry Packs

Image
The more convenient it is the more consumers gravitate to it, especially with busy lives we all live. And that convenience for consumers can lead to dangers when children are involved. That's why poison control officials have issued a warning to parents about the new brightly colored little packets that combine laundry detergent with other cleaning agents. It's a new convenience for consumers, and now new danger for kids. Nearly 250 people have called poison centers in a past couple of months after small children swallowed or bit into the packets, the Associated Press reports. And some of the kids have gotten very sick much sicker than kids usually get when they swallow a little detergent, says an alert from The American Association of Poison Control Centers. For example: -- A 15-month-old child developed "profuse vomiting" and had to be put on a ventilator at a hospital to keep breathing. -- A 17-month-old child developed nausea and vomiting and also inhale

About Sunscreen What You Need to Know

Image
As the weather gets warmer, enjoying the sunshine becomes top priority. But increased sun exposure also means an increased risk of sunburn and, in turn, skin cancer if you don't adequately protect yourself. Last summer the U.S. Food and Drug Administration instituted new sunscreen label guidelines so consumers could clearly tell which ones offered the most protection. The new labeling was supposed to be in effect by this summer, but the FDA extended the deadline to December, as companies were having trouble complying. Dermatologists say having the proper information is crucial when out in the summer sun. "Wearing sunscreen and then deliberately going out in the sun is almost as [bad] as going out with no sunscreen at all," said Dr. Robin Ashinoff, chief of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center. "You don't get burned, but the UV rays are still getting into your skin. Sunscreen is important, but you should also wear the rig

Cialis And Similar Yet Natural Alternatives

Image
BY: Nitin Vaghela Cialis is a drug that is used in the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED). The problem is more common in older men although men of any age can suffer. How it works A complicated series of actions and reactions must occur for a man to gain and maintain an erection. The end result is that chemicals are released in order to relax certain muscles and allow blood flow to the penis to increase, thus causing erection. Erection ceases when a chemical called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) is released and breaks down the other chemical, causing the blood flow to decrease and the penis to return to its flaccid state. Cialis' active ingredient is Tadalafil. This works to inhibit PDE5, meaning the chemicals that cause increased blood flow to the penis remain intact for longer, resulting in a longer asting erection. Is it Safe? As with any medication, men need to consult a doctor before using Cialis. Because tadalifil is a blood thinner, there are certain medicati

G.I. Joe 2 Pushed Back to 2013 to Get 3D Treatment

Image
Summer movie lineup in 2012 has lost one of its most anticipated titles. It has been reported that Paramount Pictures has decided to push back the release date for "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" from June 29 this year to March 29, 2013. According to Deadline, the sudden decision was made in order to give the action movie a 3D treatment. "We're going to do a conscientious 3D job because we've seen how it can better box office internationally," explained the studio exec to the film site. "Jim Cameron did all of 'Titanic' 3D in post - and look how well that movie turned out." Paramount seemingly made a right decision given that 3D format is more promising internationally with Russia and China building new 3D theaters this week. Though so, Hollywood is shocked over the postponement news since Paramount has been massively promoting "G.I. Joe 2" including making a Super Bowl ad earlier this year. As for another reason why the high-octane

Relevance of Web Security as Web Based Attacks Proliferate

Image
BY: Nitin Vaghela The issue of Web Security is a prominent one in the task list of IT department. Web has emerged as the main source for criminals to leverage it for attacks on networks. Criminals push malware, spam spyware, carry out phishing, pharming, intrusions, and more through malicious web sites, web based applications and emails in order to steal data and gain unauthorized access. Also, today the threats are increasingly complex, designed to appear low in profile and mutate easily to avoid detection and are the handiwork of extremely organized professional cyber criminal groups. This makes web security an important element in any IT security strategy in organizations. According to Web Security analysts, web based attacks are the biggest of all risks that affect the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of information assets on the networks of a business. How Web based Attackers Compromise Security The modus operandi of criminals involves altering the backend dat

An exhaustive introduction to the Ferrari FF

Image
BY: Nic Cackett An exhaustive introduction to the Ferrari FF is likely to be superfluous to even the most casual Ferrari fan so we'll only pause for a brief recap before getting to the nitty gritty of our first UK drive. Launched around a year ago, the shooting-brake-styled four-seater offered buyers a first: a full-size Grand Tourer with a 651bhp V12 engine and, somewhat contentiously, four-wheel-drive.

The colossal, naturally aspirated unit is a direct injection descendant of the V12 that featured in the Enzo, but Ferrari's first production all-wheel drive system is an altogether more novel solution. When required by the front wheels, power is fed directly from the crank into a second, smaller gearbox located beneath the engine. This transmission only has two forward gears, and because its ratios cannot replicate the seven-speeds of the main gearbox, the resulting wheel speed mismatch is managed by two continually slipping clutches. The main benefit of the system is that it

Check HIV status Pregnant women Advised

Image
A mother living with HIV has advised pregnant women to go for Voluntary Testing and Counselling (VTC) to know their HIV status to help protect their unborn babies against HIV infections. She said if she had taken advantage of such an opportunity, she would have protected her child from getting infected. The 32-year-old mother was speaking at a programme on prevention of HIV as part of a behavioural change project, organised by the Technical Support Unit of the Ghana AIDS Commission in the Eastern Region for students of the Victory Vocational Institute in Koforidua. The programme was aimed at protecting the students against HIV infection. She said she was a strong woman who never knew her HIV status until she gave birth to her first child about four years ago. The woman said 10 months after delivery, her baby developed a boil under the armpit and was taken to hospital but after several treatments without success, the medical officer called for HIV test and the baby was found t

Manny Pacquiao Denounces Anti Gay Allegations

Image
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Manny Pacquiao says he loves and supports gays and lesbians, even though he does not approve of gay marriage. The world champion boxer and Filipino congressman has been criticized ever since he gave an interview to the examiner.com website in which he opposed President Barack Obama's support for gay marriage. Pacquiao said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press that he doesn't support gay marriage because of his Roman Catholic beliefs. But he says he has gay friends and relatives, and supports their rights. The previous story contained a Bible passage calling for the death of "a man (who) lies with a man," and Pacquiao says many readers erroneously believed he had quoted that verse. He says he had not. Pacquiao was banned from filming a television show at a Hollywood shopping mall after the article appeared, and a petition appeared on change.org to persuade sponsor Nike to dump him. Samsung to sell ultra-thin $9,000 OLED HDTV in 2012

Image
Samsung on Thursday announced plans to launch its new flat-panel OLED TVs during the second half of this year, according to The Washington Post. OLED technology is still new and therefor very expensive. The company's high-end 55-inch OLED TV will be priced double Samsung's current offerings, costing more than $9,000 when it launches in South Korea. The technology provides users with improved picture quality and deeper color saturation with high contrast. OLED technology also allows vendors to develop thinner and lighter TVs, and Samsung believes it will take two to three year before it becomes an industry standard. The South Korean electronics giant previously announced that it would showcase its 55-inch OLED HDTV at Berlin's IFA trade show in late August after first showing it off at CES in January. Samsung unveils Galaxy S III Challenge iPhone

Image
Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest hand-held weapon in its war against Apple a smartphone dubbed Galaxy S III that is lighter and thinner than the iPhone despite having a screen nearly twice as large. The S III, with voice command, will go on sale in Europe at the end of this month and in the United States and other countries this summer. The company did not offer pricing information or disclose which U.S. carriers would offer the phone, which will run on 4G wireless networks. Samsung is hoping the new phone will help it leapfrog Apple. During the first quarter of this year, Apple accounted for 29 percent of U.S. smartphones sold, while Samsung was close behind at 24 percent, according to figures released this week by NPD Group, a market research firm. Some analysts believe that Samsung sold more devices than Apple around the world from January to March. Smartphone observers have attributed Samsung's success to the growing prepaid-phone market, in which consumers can buy

He's Considering Retirement Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Image
At the end of a tough, long night,Floyd Mayweather Jr.was left staring at a June 1 jail sentence and a boxing landscape that he seems to believe cannot deliver another quality opponent. The unbeaten 35-year-old champion late Saturday said he's leaning "80-20" toward retirement. "If it was my last fight, I gave them a bang," Mayweather (43-0) said after his unanimous-decision (118-110, 117-111, 117-111) triumph over Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto (37-3) at MGM Grand. "There's really no one for me to fight anymore." Well, there's Manny Pacquiao, but with the sides divided over money, ego and whatever else they can think up as leverage, who else is there? The obvious backup to Pacquiao seemed to beMexico's21-year-old Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (40-0-1), who dominated Pomona's Shane Mosley by unanimous decision Saturday. But Alvarez's promoter Richard Schaefer said after the fight he'd just booked the rising star an

Lose Weight Sleep 9 Hours a Night

Image
Sleeping too much does not make one fat in fact, sleeping more than 9 hours a night may suppress genetic influences on body weight, U.S. researchers say. Principal investigator Dr. Nathaniel Watson of the University of Washington and colleagues said the study looked at 1,088 pairs of twins and found sleeping less than 7 hours a night was associated with both increased body mass index and greater genetic influences on BMI. The study, published in the journal Sleep, found the heritability of BMI was twice as high for short sleepers than for twins who slept longer than 9 hours a night. Watson and colleagues determined that for twins sleeping less than 7 hours, genetic influences accounted for 70 percent of the differences in BMI, with common environment accounting for just 4 percent and unique environment 26 percent. For twins averaging more than 9 hours of sleep, genetic factors accounted for 32 percent of weight variations, with common environment accounting for 51 percent and u
