In recent years there have been several studies published in journals, which suggest a link between oral health and general health, with many implying that neglecting your oral health increases your risk of medical conditions. One of the most common associations is oral health and heart health, with some studies suggesting that poor oral health increases the risk of heart disease. Experts believe that oral health has a significant bearing on general health because bacteria from the mouth can travel to other parts o...

Five Reasons You Should Get Vaccinated

Image
From the dawn of time, the human population has periodically been decimated by outbreaks of serious disease. In the 1600s, bubonic plague was rife across Europe and millions perished from the disease. The influenza virus has also been a deadly killer over the centuries and even today, people still die from the more serious strains of the flu. But thankfully for mankind, many of the most serious diseases such as yellow fever, typhoid and diphtheria have been all but eradicated as a result of widespread vaccination programmes. Why Bother With Vaccinations? Even though serious diseases such as measles and mumps have mostly been vanquished in modern society, they haven't disappeared completely, which is why vaccination programmes are just as vital today as they were a few decades ago. Without protection from vaccinations, you and your family are at risk of serious disease or even death. Vaccinations Are Safe Millions of people are vaccinated every year and even though there a...

What Causes Autoimmune Disease?

Image
It's amazing just how many different types of autoimmune diseases there are in the medical books. The conventional medical community claims they are unaware of the cause of the body suddenly turning on itself. Doctors who take a more natural approach believe otherwise. Here are the type 5 causes of autoimmune disease. 1. Poor Diet Poor diet is one of the leading causes of all disease, including autoimmune disease. The Standard American Diet is also responsible for the rising obesity rate, the epidemic of cancer, and the startling array of mental and emotional disorders millions of people suffer from. Fast food, processed food, microwavable meals, soda, candy, etc. offer little-to-no nutritional value and are chock full of chemicals, preservatives, additives, and synthetic sweeteners your body doesn't recognize. As long as you continue to ingest these foods, your immune system works overtime to fight them off and protect you. An overworked immune system eventually ex...

The Effects of Drugs on the Brain

Image
narconon.ca By Roger Pahuriray There are a lot of people who are asking this same question about drugs: what happens next when a drug enters the body and makes its way to our brain? There have been recent studies about how the brain works, and the complex relationship between electrical and chemical activity, but we still have a long way to go. How Drugs Change Personality and Behavior Addictive drugs have the ability to activate the pleasure circuit of the brain known as the mesolimbic dopamine cortex. According to some health experts, drug addiction is a biological process which alters the way our brain's pleasure circuit functions. It is important to examine the effects of drugs on the brain's neurotransmission to understand how it works. All drugs have the capability to change the way our brain works. This is done by affecting chemical neurotransmission. Heroin and LSD for instance, can mimic a natural neurotransmitter's effects. PCP, on the other hand, can ...

The disease is currently incurable because of its unique properties although some treatments to prolong and improve the lives of the affected exist. Patients require regular observation and tests because of the inevitable infections present so medics can give accurate diagnosis. Treating CF is a battle on many fronts because of the weakened immune systems of the affected. With the West Nile virus present in Alachua County

Image
Staff are struggling to determine how best to control the mosquitoes carrying it. The Alachua County Health Department has seen far higher numbers of culex nigripalpus mosquitoes West Nile's primary carrier this year than in the past five, said health department administrator Paul Myers. With several flocks of sentinel chickens and a horse testing positive for West Nile virus, the county was placed under a mosquito-borne illness advisory on Sept. 27. The virus was discovered in the area on Sept. 20. The county also has found non-human cases of eastern equine encephalitis, which is transmitted to people less than West Nile virus but is more lethal. If virus transmission intensifies or human cases are recorded, the county will be given alert status, Myers said at a Tuesday County Commission meeting. The county health department's surveillance system for mosquito-borne illnesses includes regular testing of sentinel chickens, which are often the first to show the presen...

Skin cancer vs vitamin D

Image
REMEMBER when we used to lie out in the sun for hours covered in coconut oil? If you can, you're pre-skin cancer warnings now appear regularly on our TV and billboards. Slip, slop, slap is the message we've being given. But, with vitamin D deficiency more common, many people are also wondering if the sun protection message is affecting their health in other ways. The sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation is both the major cause of skin cancer and the best source of vitamin D, according to the Cancer Council Australia. "We need to balance the risk of skin cancer from too much sun exposure with maintaining adequate vitamin D levels," it says. "Sensible sun protection does not put people at risk of vitamin D deficiency." Why we need vitamin D and how we get it Vitamin D keeps bones and muscles strong, as well as keep our immune system robust. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cognit...

Smoking and Drinking People who smoke or drink heavily may develop pancreatic cancer

Image
At an earlier age than folks who avoid those habits, a new study suggests. It's long been known that smoking is a risk factor for developing pancreatic cancer - a disease that is rarely caught early and has a grim prognosis. Only about five of every 100 people diagnosed with the cancer are still alive five years later. The evidence on heavy drinking has been more mixed, but some studies have suggested it's also a risk factor. Now, the new results show the disease may strike smokers and drinkers earlier in life. "If you do have these habits, and you're going to develop pancreatic cancer, the age of presentation may be younger," said lead researcher Dr. Michelle A. Anderson, of the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. Her team also found that the effect disappeared for former smokers or drinkers if they had quit 10 years or more before being diagnosed. On average, the risk of developing pancreatic cancer in your lifetime is about one...

Cancer has become the leading cause of death among U.S. Latinos

Image
Nosing past heart disease in 2009, researchers at the American Cancer Society reported Monday. For most demographic groups and for the country as a whole heart disease is the top killer, claiming a total of 599,413 American lives in 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That same year, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 567,628 Americans died of cancer. Among Latinos that year, the rankings were reversed: 29,935 died of cancer and 29,611 of heart disease, according to a study in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. The change may be due to demographics, said Rebecca Siegel, an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta and lead author of the study. The average age of Latinos in the United States is 27 and of non-Hispanic whites is 42. In the overall population, cancer is the leading cause of death in people under 85 years of age. "This is primarily driven by the young age distribution," Siegel sai...

Avoid ovarian cancer tests

Image
Tests commonly recommended to screen healthy women for ovarian cancer do more harm than good and should not be performed, a panel of medical experts said Monday. The screenings -- blood tests for a substance linked to cancer, and ultrasound scans to examine the ovaries -- do not lower the death rate from the disease, and they yield many false-positive results that lead to unnecessary operations with high complication rates, the panel said. "There is no existing method of screening for ovarian cancer that is effective in reducing deaths," said Dr. Virginia Moyer , chairwoman of the expert panel, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. "In fact, a high percentage of women who undergo screening experience false-positive test results and consequently may be subjected to unnecessary harms, such as major surgery." The advice against testing applies only to healthy women with an average risk of ovarian cancer, not to those with suspicious symptoms or those at h...

Whose Offices Are Germier? Men vs. Women

Image
If you're reading this at work, brace yourself. A new study shows that typical offices have hundreds of types of bacteria in them, and men's offices have the most. Researchers report finding more than 500 different types of bacteria on common surfaces in offices in three major U.S. cities. And, perhaps less surprisingly to some people, they found that men's offices are more contaminated than women's. "Humans are spending an increasing amount of time indoors, yet we know little about the diversity of bacteria and viruses where we live, work, and play," says lead researcher Scott Kelley, PhD. The San Diego State University biologist and his team swabbed five common office surfaces -- chairs, phones, desks, computer mice, and keyboards -- in 90 different offices, 30 each in San Francisco, New York, and Tucson. The research team, which was partially funded by the Clorox Corporation, found bacteria on nearly every surface they tested. Most of it came from t...
