Drive? Is Low Libido Really The Problem?

Image
By John Smith I've been coming across a lot of articles lately that all talk about the huge need of Viagra for men. You see, the world and even the internet is stocked full with what is mostly just really good ad campaigns. Don't get me wrong. As a guy, I think the idea of Viagra 500mg pills is great, but is it really necessary? Advertising isn't just on the TV any more. It's all over the place, in your morning coffee, in your breakfast cereal, in your house cleaning items, on your facebook, on your phone calls-basically it's everywhere. When you are making a decision on what is good for your body and what is not, don't always go by what you read. Make a careful decision and council with the right people. I have the hardest time researching health issues on the internet because I know that most the time what folks have to say is basically just promoting a product and a lot of fluff to go with it. Take the subject of Viagra for men , for example. Yes, there...

The Simple How Tos of Vaping

Image
It really is simple. The act of vaping is designed to pretty much mimic the act of smoking a regular tobacco cigarette. You draw on the end of the electronic cigarette, the vapor enters your mouth and lungs, the nicotine is delivered, and then you blow out the excess vapor. One of the biggest differences is that an electronic cigarette will not light up brighter, nor produce more vapor, from being drawn on harder. Slow and long pulls are the best way to create the most amount of vapor with an e-cig. If your electronic cigarette begins to produce less vapor there are two most likely causes: either your battery is low, or you are low on e-liquid, or both. As you become familiar with your electronic cigarette, preferred e-liquid and battery performance, you will learn how to stay a step ahead of your electronic cigarette, and rarely experience you e-cig running low on vapor. Many users say that both the e-liquid and the battery run low around the same time, so you can keep things flow...

Spotlight on Men's Health

Erica Moss is the community manager for Georgetown University's online MSN degree program. She also enjoys blogging, TV and pop culture. Maintaining a sound mind and sound body is an ever-present challenge for both men and women, but the lack of awareness around the topic of men's health is a disturbing reality. Maintaining a proper diet and exercise is not an easy task, but a surprising number of men don't have the basic facts about the most common risks to their health, and to change that, we need more education around this important issue. The Problem More than half of all premature deaths among men are preventable, according to the infographic below. Causes of preventable death include smoking, obesity, alcohol and drug use, and some types of cancer (such as testicular cancer, which can be treated effectively if detected early). Men are also less likely than women to take advantage of the health care resources that they have access. Via Nurse Practitioner P...

Lung cancer and stigma: The USA's biggest cancer

Image
The USA's biggest cancer killer gets a disproportionately small share of public attention and research dollars. One big reason is that lung cancer is seen largely as a self-inflicted "smoker's disease," says a new report from FairWarning, a nonprofit online publication. The fact that many people with the disease die too quickly to become advocates for their own cause also plays a role. With many dying within a few months, "there's not much time to fit a walkathon in," one expert says. Lice treatment: A new prescription lotion for head lice called ivermectin left 75% of kids pest-free two weeks after one treatment in a new study, meaning it may work better than older remedies. But it wasn't tested directly against other treatments and lacks long-term safety data. So some experts say it's still a last resort. (HealthDay) Mumps outbreak: A mumps outbreak that hit Orthodox Jewish communities in New York and New Jersey in 2009-2010 spread larg...

Just how good is your oral hygiene?

Image
The quality of our oral hygiene is dependent on a number of factors working together, such as: Diet Oral cleaning Professional dental scaling and polishing Dental treatments Teeth grinding habits Lifestyle choices Dental check-ups Diet - The types and combinations of foods we consume daily impact our oral health. For example, foods high in sugar and acid may cause excess plaque build-up and potential tooth decay. Beverages, such as wine, coffee and tea may discolour or stain teeth, not leaving the mouth looking fresh. Oral cleaning - Whether or not we follow dentist-recommended oral hygiene practices impacts oral hygiene and health. Brushing teeth daily with proper teeth brushing technique after meals, before sleep and on awaking removes debris and plaque build-up from the teeth. Flossing daily after meals removes food that maybe trapped between teeth. Brushing the tongue removes plaque and bacteria from the surface. Proper oral cleaning keeps the mouth hygienic and fre...

Smoking Cigarettes, Smoker Turn to Electronic Cigarettes

Image
A recent study in Korea discovers that those smoking over 20 cigarettes per day may be as much as three times as likely to suffer a potentially fatal SAH (subarachnoid hemorrhage). Researchers appeal to smokers to turn to electronic cigarettes which are much healthier. IECMA (International Electronic Cigarette Manufacturers Association) advises smokers to select big brand-name electronic cigarettes manufactured by large electronic cigarette OEM factories like KIMREE, JSB and JOYETECH. The study carried out by Seoul National University Hospital shows that heavy smokers may be as much as three times as likely to suffer a potentially fatal SAH (subarachnoid hemorrhage). Heavy smoke here means smoking over 20 cigarettes per day. Therefore, researchers appeal to smokers to quit smoking or turn to electronic cigarettes. " Electronic Cigarettes aim at providing people a healthier lifestyle. Comparing to traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes are nonflammable without n...

Smoking and Drinking People who smoke or drink heavily may develop pancreatic cancer

Image
At an earlier age than folks who avoid those habits, a new study suggests. It's long been known that smoking is a risk factor for developing pancreatic cancer - a disease that is rarely caught early and has a grim prognosis. Only about five of every 100 people diagnosed with the cancer are still alive five years later. The evidence on heavy drinking has been more mixed, but some studies have suggested it's also a risk factor. Now, the new results show the disease may strike smokers and drinkers earlier in life. "If you do have these habits, and you're going to develop pancreatic cancer, the age of presentation may be younger," said lead researcher Dr. Michelle A. Anderson, of the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. Her team also found that the effect disappeared for former smokers or drinkers if they had quit 10 years or more before being diagnosed. On average, the risk of developing pancreatic cancer in your lifetime is about one...

Type 2 diabetes boosts death risk from breast cancer

Image
Sunday Sept 16, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in Cancer Causes and Control suggests that being type 2 diabetic potentially increases risk of death from breast cancer. Because having type 2 diabetes also means to have diabetes treatment, diabetes treatment can potentially be linked to higher risk for breast cancer death. M. T. Redaniel of University of Bristol in Bristol, UK and colleagues conducted the case-control study and found women with breast cancer who also suffered type 2 diabetes mellitus were 40 percent more likely to die from all causes, compared with those with breast cancer only. The association, which was derived already after adjustment for age, period, region, smoking status, body mass index, alcohol drinking and deprivation, was based on data from 52,657 women with type 2 diabetes diagnosed between 1987 and 2007 and 30,210 randomly selected women without type 2 diabetes. This association can be easily understood. Type 2 diabetes mellitus patients h...

Obese 'lose memory sooner'

Image
Those who are obese, and have other health problems such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, lose their memory and thinking skills almost a quarter faster, found researchers at University College London. Their study was based on almost 6,500 Whitehall civil servants, whose health was monitored between the ages of 50 and 60. They were weighed and measured, their blood pressure and cholesterol levels were taken, and they were also asked what medication they were taking. In addition, they were asked to perform mental tests three times during the decade, which were used to assess memory and other cognitive skills. Of the 6,401 civil servants in the study, nine per cent (582) were obese. Of those, 350 were also classed as "metabolically abnormal" - meaning they had two additional risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, were taking medication for either condition, or were diabetic. The researchers found the obese tended to lose their mental po...

Largest-ever tobacco study finds 'urgent need' for policy change

Image
About half the men in numerous developing nations use tobacco, and women in those regions are taking up smoking at an earlier age than they used to, according to what is being called the largest-ever international study on tobacco use. The study, which covered enough representative samples to estimate tobacco use among 3 billion people, "demonstrates an urgent need for policy change in low- and middle-income countries," said lead researcher Gary Giovino, whose report was published in the British medical journal The Lancet. The figures bolster statements by the World Health Organization that while much of the industrialized world, including the United States, has seen a substantial reduction in smoking in recent years, the opposite trend is under way in parts of the developing world. Australian tobacco packaging laws misguided This week, Australia's high court upheld a rule that tobacco products must be in plain packaging without logos and bear graphic health warnin...

Therapy for smoking kills the pleasure of nicotine

Image
Can't kick cigarettes? A vaccine may one day help by preventing nicotine from reaching its target in the brain, according to research published this week. Most smoking therapies do a poor job of stopping the habit 70% to 80% of smokers who use an approved drug therapy to quit relapse. Scientists say this is because the targets of existing therapies are imperfect, only slightly weakening nicotine's ability to find its target in the brain. So some scientists have been trying a different approach creation of a vaccine. It would work like this: People would inject the vaccine like a shot, and the vaccine would create nicotine antibodies, molecules that can snatch up nicotine from the bloodstream before it reaches the brain. The vaccine could be used by smokers who want to quit or people who are worried about getting addicted to cigarettes in the future. Researchers have tried to create vaccines in the past, but the ones they've come up with have not been particularly effe...
