Total knee replacement is the best Arthritis Treatment

Image
In a human body, the knee is the largest joint consisting of the lower end of the thighbone called the femur, the upper end of the shinbone or tibia, and the kneecap which is known as patella. The ends where they touch are covered with a smooth substance that protects the bones and enables them to move easily, which is called the articular cartilage. Large ligaments hold the femur and tibia together and are known to give stability, while the long thigh muscles are required for complete knee strength. All remaining surfaces of the knee are covered by a thin lining called the synovial membrane. This membrane releases a fluid that lubricates the cartilage, reducing friction. Healthy knees are vital for most everyday activities. Knee pain starts when a knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury. This problem makes it hard for the person suffering to perform simple day to day activities, such as walking or climbing stairs. There are other major causes of incapacitating knee pain that...

Obese 'lose memory sooner'

Image
Those who are obese, and have other health problems such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, lose their memory and thinking skills almost a quarter faster, found researchers at University College London. Their study was based on almost 6,500 Whitehall civil servants, whose health was monitored between the ages of 50 and 60. They were weighed and measured, their blood pressure and cholesterol levels were taken, and they were also asked what medication they were taking. In addition, they were asked to perform mental tests three times during the decade, which were used to assess memory and other cognitive skills. Of the 6,401 civil servants in the study, nine per cent (582) were obese. Of those, 350 were also classed as "metabolically abnormal" - meaning they had two additional risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, were taking medication for either condition, or were diabetic. The researchers found the obese tended to lose their mental po...

Whose Offices Are Germier? Men vs. Women

Image
If you're reading this at work, brace yourself. A new study shows that typical offices have hundreds of types of bacteria in them, and men's offices have the most. Researchers report finding more than 500 different types of bacteria on common surfaces in offices in three major U.S. cities. And, perhaps less surprisingly to some people, they found that men's offices are more contaminated than women's. "Humans are spending an increasing amount of time indoors, yet we know little about the diversity of bacteria and viruses where we live, work, and play," says lead researcher Scott Kelley, PhD. The San Diego State University biologist and his team swabbed five common office surfaces -- chairs, phones, desks, computer mice, and keyboards -- in 90 different offices, 30 each in San Francisco, New York, and Tucson. The research team, which was partially funded by the Clorox Corporation, found bacteria on nearly every surface they tested. Most of it came from t...

Irregular Periods, With PCOS Treatment?

Image
Teen girls get irregular periods for many different reasons, including health conditions - like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) - that cause changes in hormones. When a girl has PCOS, her ovaries produce higher than normal amounts of hormones called androgens. These androgens can interfere with the egg development and release that are part of a girl's normal menstrual cycle. There are several ways to treat PCOS. If a girl is overweight, weight loss can sometimes restore hormone levels to normal. Doctors also might prescribe medications that reduce androgen levels. How PCOS is treated all depends on the individual and her unique body chemistry. Sometimes doctors may try out different treatments before landing on the right one. So work with your doctor and go to follow-up appointments. That way you can keep your doc informed about how you're feeling, how well a medication is working, and what your cycle is doing.
