Milk proteins reduce blood pressure

Supplementation with whey or casein in combination with physical activity is associated with significant improvements in the readings of blood pressure in young women with obesity and hypertension , according to a new study.

Scientists from the University of Florida, USA, reported that the milk protein casein supplements sports training overweight women and helps reduce aortic systolic blood pressure. In particular, taking whey and casein was associated with a reduction in brachial systolic blood pressure by 5 points, and aortic systolic blood pressure by 7 points.

Benefits of dairy products for systolic blood pressure has long been known. Thus, the use of dairy product may be an additional tool in the prevention or treatment of hypertension .

Scientists explain that the aortic blood pressure, and not brachial blood pressure is considered to be the best predictor of cardiovascular benefits of the intervention using antihypertensives.

"To our knowledge, our study is the first to demonstrate a reduction in aortic systolic blood pressure under the influence of milk proteins. Because aortic blood pressure adversely affects the function of the left ventricle to a greater extent than the brachial blood pressure, our findings may be of clinical importance ", - the scientists.

The results of the work were published in the journal American Journal of Hypertension.
