Lollipops protect teeth from decay and bacteria
German researchers at the biotechnology company created lollipops with bacteria that help fight tooth decay.
To achieve the desired effect, microbiologists added to candy population dead bacteria Lactobacillus paracasei, says the results of their study published in the Journal of Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins .
Caries occurs because oral microorganisms, during the life of releasing an acid that damage the tooth enamel. To reduce the amount of streptococci microbiologists led added to candy canes killed by heat treatment Lactobacillus paracasei. As microbiologists believe, these lactic acid bacteria associated with streptococcal thanks located in their cell wall sugars. Then, when a person swallows or spits saliva microorganisms, they leave the mouth.
In unusual trials involved 60 volunteers candies, half of which went to lollipops with bacteria (the first group), the other used the regular sweets with the same taste (the second group). Scientists took saliva samples from study participants before and after sucking lollipops. It appeared that three quarters of the first group of volunteers significantly decreased the number of streptococci in the oral cavity.
"This is a new method of dealing with microorganisms - we do not need to destroy them, we can simply delete them mouth". Now researchers want to conduct more extensive research on the effectiveness of their candies.
