Points to ponder when thinking about purchasing a laptop

A laptop is a handy item for any working person or student who is constantly on the move to have. But like everything in life, there are upsides and downsides to purchasing a laptop. And not all of them come cheap so how do you know if you should purchase another bulky desktop or get a shiny new laptop instead? Here are a few handy points you should know before you rush out and buy one.

Laptops are notoriously slow

Laptops have smaller memory capabilities than its desktop counterpart so you can be sure, no matter how spiffy and modern your new laptop is, it is not going to be as slick and super-fast as your desktop in your office or at home. You can bulk up the memory for your laptop by purchasing extra hardware, but you would need to have a look at your needs and requirements before choosing which one to buy.

Laptops get dirty

It is pretty easy to keep a desktop computer clean it's not getting shoved in a bag, going on holiday, being packed in the car, used at the beach, next to the pool, in the kitchen, at the gym or while you are sitting in front of the TV with biscuits and tea. Crumbs, dust, san and other grit and grime makes its way easily into the keyboard and onto the screen clogging up the keys. Use a stiff brush or a good blast of a strong hairdryer on the cool setting to dislodge the debris.

The battery life is pretty much rubbish

Let's face it a laptop these days has a battery life of the average cell phone. Once that 2 year mark has passed, you will be lucky if you still have the same optimum battery life that you did when you purchase the laptop. More often than not even if you have looked after it properly and you have not overcharged it, the battery is going to show signs of wear and tear. And the worst part is that the cost of replacing the battery is so high you might as well just replace the laptop a huge consideration overall.

Upgrading your laptop

Look, the minute you bought your laptop there was something new that came out 5 minutes later that had more cutting edge technology than your purchase. It's the name of the game. So when you start seeing signs of needing an upgrade you would be better off getting a boffin in to upgrade your desktop which you can pretty much carry on doing until kingdom come. With your laptop you are pretty much wasting your time. Donate your laptop to somebody else and get a new one instead.

Overheating Laptops

Despite its namesake, laptops are not actually designed to sit on your laps for long periods of time it will start getting hotter and hotter every time you put it on your lap. Ironic and slightly defeating the purpose, you can still use it on your lap but it is not recommended that you do it for hours on end, you will be uncomfortable anyway. Pop it on the table top, sit up straight like your Mother told you, and work from a desk instead.

The grumble about the keyboard

So when your desktop keyboard goes on the blink in the middle of a deadline after you have had a small tantrum you get to the store and you buy another one and plug it in. And Bob's your aunty except when you have the same sort of problems with your laptop keyboard things start to get ever so complicated. You stand the risk of having to replace your entire laptop and not just the keyboard.

Gaming and laptops

Make sure that when you purchase a laptop that you intent to use for gaming that you have done your homework in terms of graphics card and sound card requirements. If your primary reason for getting a computer is for gaming, you will be much better off with a desktop their memory and power capabilities are that much stronger and you can upgrade them constantly. A laptop is not going to be what you need.
